Petition of Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood, ca. 1717.
Contains a petition of Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood to the Lords Commissioners for Trade & Plantations regarding the case of Harry Beverley, a master of a sloop for the West India trade, who was taken & plundered by the Spaniards. According to the petition, Beverley and his crew were made prisoners by a Spanish man of war and sent to La Vera Cruz, even though they never acted with hostility and were no closer to the Spanish dominions than the island of Bermuda. Spotswood asks for the Lords consideration of so many of His Majesty's subjects who are either sent to work in the Spanish mines or suffer from a long & severe imprisonment.
