Abstract

Contains a petition of John Burrett of Spotsylvania County to the Speaker & House of Burgesses asking for compensation for the loss of his slave named Jacob who burned to death in the public jail. According to the petition, Jacob was arrested for breaking open a house belonging to Col. John Thornton and stealing apparel from his slave named Plato.
