George R To Our Trusty & Welbeloved Alexander Spotswood Esqr: Our Lieut: Governor of Our Colony & Dominion of Virginia in America and to Our Lieut: Govr: or Our Comander in Chief of Our said Colony for the time being Greeting, Herewith you will receive a Seal prepar'd by Our Order, for the Use of Our Government of Virginia, which Seal is engraven on the one Side with Our Royal Effigies, and an Indian on his Knee presenting Tobacco unto Us, this Inscription being under Our said Effigies, En dat Virginia Quartam, and this other Inscription round the Circumference Sigillum Provinciæ de Virginia in America, On the other Side of the said Seal, Our Arms, Garter, Crown, Supporters & Motto, with Our Titles round the Circumference And Our Will & Pleasure is, and we do hereby authorize You, and Our Lieut: or Commander in Chief of Our said Colony for the time being, to affix the said Seal to all Patents & Grants of Lands, and to all publick Acts & Instruments of Government, which shall be made & pass'd in Our Name, within Our said Colony, & that it be to all Intents & purposes of the same Force & Validity as any former Seal appointed for the publick Use of the Government in Our said Colony, hath heretofore been; And we further will & require you upon the Receipt of the said Seal to cause the former Seal to be broke before you in Council, and then to transmit the said former Seal so broken to Our Commissioners for Trade & Plantations in Order to be laid before Us in Council as usual.
